This September, Sideshow Theatre Company invites you to blur the line between life and death with the Midwest premiere of Kathleen Akerley's critically acclaimed Theories of the Sun. It’s 1963 and in a remote French hotel Barbara and Elizabeth Sweeny (an American mother and daughter) undergo some peculiar medical testing by a brilliant and eccentric doctor who specializes in unusual diseases. Accompanied by a young Tom Stoppard, a whiskey-fueled Tennessee Williams, and the mysterious scholar Mr. Asher, Elizabeth seeks to understand and cure her terrifying illness. Part mystery and part science fiction, this dazzling play's twists and turns will keep you guessing until the very end.

Scottie Caldwell is honored to be a part of this production! She is an artist-in-residence with The Ruckus. She was most recently seen in The Reckless Ruthless Brutal Charge of It, or The Train Play with Will Act for Food and Common Hatred with The Ruckus. She has also worked with Teatro Vista, Redmoon Theater, New Leaf Theatre, and The Gift Theatre Company, among others. She received her BA from the University of Virginia, where she was awarded the T. Braxton Woody award for French and the William Demoville Pettway Prize for Drama, and she appears in the web series The Scarlet Line.

Matt proudly serves as producing artistic director of Sideshow Theatre Company, where he was last seen in Mai Dang Lao and both iterations of Stupid Fucking Bird. Other performance credits include Idomeneus (Jeff Award for ensemble), The Golden Dragon, Tyrant, Heddatron, Theories of the Sun, Dante Dies!! (and then things get weird), and others (Sideshow Theatre Company); The Killer Angels (Lifeline Theatre); Failure: A Love Story (Victory Gardens); Common Hatred (The Ruckus); As Told by the Vivian Girls (Dog & Pony); Chicago Fire (NBC) and two seasons with The Lost Colony on Roanoke Island, NC. Matt received his BA in drama at the University of Virginia.

Andy most recently he appeared as Stanley in Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party, at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in an understudy performance. Some of his Chicago credits include: Lieutenant of Inishmore (Northlight Theatre), 9 Circles, The Gacy Play, Heddatron, and Theories of the Sun (Sideshow Theatre), The Best Christmas Pageant Ever and The Hiding Place (Provision Theatre), As Fat as You Can (Next Theatre), Rhymes with Evil (Infusion Theatre), Comedy of Errors, Julius Caesar, Pericles, Macbeth, Twelfth Night, and Henry VII (Illinois Shakespeare Festival). He studied Meisner with The Acting Studio, Inc. in NYC and holds a BA in theatre performance from Western Michigan University and an MFA in acting from Illinois State University.

Michael Mercier
The American
Michael arrived in Chicago last October from Minneapolis where he graduated from the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater BFA Actor Training Program. In Chicago, he’s had the pleasure of working with Halcyon Theatre’s Alcyone Festival, Vintage Theater Collective (where he is also a company member), and recently performed in Chelsea Marcantel’s (a)Symmetry Cycle. While in Minnesota, Michael worked with the Great River Shakespeare Festival, Minnesota Centennial Showboat, and Minneapolis Theater Garage. He was also the directing intern for the Guthrie’s Two Gentlemen of Verona directed by Joe Dowling and an intern with the League of Chicago Theatres in Spring 2010.

Dylan is thrilled to be working with Sideshow Theatre again, last appearing with them as Mr. Asher in Theories of the Sun. Dylan has had the pleasure of working with a great many theatres in Chicago. Past productions include Cloud 9 (Gift Theatre), Awake and Sing (Northlight Theatre), the Chicago premiere of Aftermath (Signal Ensemble), the U.S. premiere of Absolute Hell (Gift Theatre), as well as work with Lookingglass Theatre, Promethean Theatre Ensemble, and New Leaf Theatre. Jesse is excited to be making his Chicago acting debut with Sideshow! Up next Jesse will be collaborating with Patrick Andrews on a devised piece about sex and Barbies for About Face Theatre's XYZ Festival. Most recently he directed Pee School for ATC's Silver Project and Reversing the Flow of Shit for ATC's Big Shoulder Festival. Jesse worked as director of the Second Stage at Perseverance Theatre in Juneau, AK where his directing credits included Mr. Marmalade and The Typographer's Dream. Before Alaska, Jesse was a member of critically acclaimed Portland, OR based acting ensemble Theatre Vertigo where his directing and acting credits include Valparaiso, Like I Say, The Love of the Nightingale, The Furnished, and Let There Be Word (for Portland Center Stage's JAW/West). Jesse is a proud student of Black Box Acting Studio and a member of the queer-electro-fuck performance group DAAN.

Kathleen is a Sideshow artistic associate whose previous work with the company has been as playwright (Theories of the Sun and Tyrant) and co-director (Tyrant). She lives most of the year in Washington, D.C., where she has acted with 1st Stage, Baltimore Shakespeare Festival, Catalyst Theatre, Cherry Red, Glamonstrosity, Olney Theatre, Studio Theatre, Studio Theatre Secondstage, Theater Alliance, Washington Shakespeare Company (now WSC AvantBard), and Washington Stage Guild. MFA, Catholic University of America; graduate of the Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory.

Jonathan has been the artistic director of Sideshow Theatre since its founding in 2007. He has directed and assisted for Sideshow, Greenhouse Theater Center, Lookingglass, Steppenwolf, Goodman, Diversionary Theatre, Chicago Dramatists, Theatre Seven of Chicago, Pavement Group and the Earl Hamner, Jr. Theatre. Recent projects include truth and reconciliation, The Happiest Place on Earth, Antigonick, Stupid Fucking Bird, Idomeneus (Jeff Award for ensemble), and others. Recent dramaturgy credits include Blind Date, Objects in the Mirror, Gloria, War Paint, The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window, and Disgraced, all at Goodman Theatre. Jonathan is a graduate of the University of Virginia, currently serves on the board of directors of the League of Chicago Theatres, and is the literary manager for Goodman Theatre.

Megan is a founding ensemble member for Sideshow Theatre. She served as the company's executive director from 2007 - 2016. She works with Sideshow Theatre directing world or Chicago premieres (Chalk, Tyrant, The Burden of Not Having a Tail, Theories of the Sun, Ekphrasis: Cave Walls to Soup Cans), and with Southern Illinois University (Joan's Laughter). Megan recently directed We Are Very Small, a sketch comedy show written by Tom McGuane at iO Chicago, and the world premiere of Target Behavior by Caity-Shea Violette with 20% Theater Company. Megan wrestles from time to time as The Cutting Edge for the Chicago League of Lady Arm Wrestlers (CLLAW). She is a proud graduate of the Catholic University of America.
Eric Luchen

Originally from Overland Park, Kansas, Eric comes to Sideshow after recently completing his second year at Purdue University in the MFA scenic design program. His recent design credits at Purdue include Scapino!, Almost, Maine, and The Shape of Things. Before Purdue, he received his BFA in theatre from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas where he participated in over 30 productions ranging from acting and directing to stage managing and scenic design. In 2008 he won first place in the American College Theatre Festival Region 3 Design Expo for his design of Cabaret. He has recently relocated to Chicago where he has been interning for scenic designer Todd Rosenthal.

David Hyman is a graduate of Northwestern University. He has designed for Soho Rep in NYC (Orange, Hat & Grace directed by Sarah Benson) and, in Chicago, Next Theatre Company (A Very Merry Unauthorized Scientology Pageant), Mary-Arrchie Theatre Company (Cherrywood directed by David Cromer), Pavement Group (punkplay for the Steppenwolf Garage Rep and Lipstick Traces: A Secret History of the Twentieth Century), Sideshow Theatre Company (Medea with Child, Theories of the Sun and Heddatron) and Northwestern University (How Can You Run With a Shell on Your Back? and many other productions). He has worked as an assistant costume designer for Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Lookingglass, the Court, The Hypocrites, and Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. Upcoming projects include Pony with About Face Theatre, where he is an artistic associate.

Jordan is a proud artistic associate of Sideshow Theatre. Around town, she has worked with Strawdog (where she is an ensemble member) Lifeline, Strange Tree, Factory, The Arc, and many more. Her most recent designs were Tyrant with Sideshow and Hey Dancin! Hey Musical! with Factory Theatre, and you can see more of her work next season at Strawdog. When not working in theatres around the city, Jordan works in the auditorium at Northeastern Illinois University. As always, love to the best two and four legged dudes in her life.

Angela is elated to join the talented production team and cast for her first production with Sideshow. Since graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with bachelors in English literature and cinema studies, Angela has designed for a number of Chicago theatre companies including Eclipse (Autumn Garden) and Grippo Productions (Sex Marks the Spot). Upcoming productions include Long Day's Journey Into Night with Polarity Ensemble Theater and Lovers with City Lit. Along with working in the theatre, Angela is currently working towards a BA in interior design with a concentration in kitchen and bath design. She would like to thank her family, friends, roommate, and Filter and all coffee shops in the Chicagoland area for their support.

When not dramaturging new works in the theatre, she can be found researching in the archive. She teaches about the theatrical past and present at the University of Tennessee, where she is an assistant professor of theatre.

Navà is Sideshow's company stage manager. Sideshow credits include production stage manager for Theories of the Sun, Heddatron in the 2011 Steppenwolf Garage Rep, and Strangerland in the 2011 Chi Fringe. Other Chicago credits include Peter and the Wolf with Lookingglass and CSO, Hunting and Gathering with Theatre 7, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Emerald City Theatre Company. His regional credits include The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later at Actors Theatre of Louisville and Wait Until Dark at The Alley Theatre in Houston. Navà holds a BA in theatre from University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. Navà is also an alumni of the Actors Theatre of Louisville Intern Company where he produced/production managed several projects with the Apprentice/Intern Company. Emily Darlington Cooke

Emily is a senior at Columbia College Chicago studying directing (for theatre, not film) and psychology. She has worked on a number of productions at Columbia, most recently directing John Patrick Shanley’s Dirty Story and co-directing and production managing an original site-specific piece for Manifest. Outside of Columbia she has had the privilege to work with St. Sebastian Players and Polarity Ensemble Theatre. She is also the TA for the Feldenkrais class at Columbia, and in her free time she enjoys baking and reading The New Yorker. She would like to thank everyone at Sideshow for being so welcoming.

Kyle is a technical director, sound designer and audio engineer. He is currently technical director for North Central College in Naperville, Illinois operating four performing arts venues including thrust, black box, proscenium theatres, and a state of the art concert hall. Technical direction credits include Theories of the Sun, Everything Freezes: another winter’s tale (Sideshow Theatre Company), Sound of Music and La Boheme (Ash Lawn Opera Festival), Voysey Inheritance, The African Company Presents Richard III, and Scapin (UVa Drama) and Enchanted April (Heritage Repertory Theatre). scenic designer
Originally from Overland Park, Kansas, Eric comes to Sideshow after recently completing his second year at Purdue University in the MFA scenic design program. His recent design credits at Purdue include Scapino!, Almost, Maine, and The Shape of Things. Before Purdue, he received his BFA in theatre from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas where he participated in over 30 productions ranging from acting and directing to stage managing and scenic design. In 2008 he won first place in the American College Theatre Festival Region 3 Design Expo for his design of Cabaret. He has recently relocated to Chicago where he has been interning for scenic designer Todd Rosenthal.
David Hyman
costume designer
David Hyman is a graduate of Northwestern University. He has designed for Soho Rep in NYC (Orange, Hat & Grace directed by Sarah Benson) and, in Chicago, Next Theatre Company (A Very Merry Unauthorized Scientology Pageant), Mary-Arrchie Theatre Company (Cherrywood directed by David Cromer), Pavement Group (punkplay for the Steppenwolf Garage Rep and Lipstick Traces: A Secret History of the Twentieth Century), Sideshow Theatre Company (Medea with Child, Theories of the Sun and Heddatron) and Northwestern University (How Can You Run With a Shell on Your Back? and many other productions). He has worked as an assistant costume designer for Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Lookingglass, the Court, The Hypocrites, and Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. Upcoming projects include Pony with About Face Theatre, where he is an artistic associate.
Jordan Kardasz
lighting designer
Jordan is a proud artistic associate of Sideshow Theatre. Around town, she has worked with Strawdog (where she is an ensemble member) Lifeline, Strange Tree, Factory, The Arc, and many more. Her most recent designs were Tyrant with Sideshow and Hey Dancin! Hey Musical! with Factory Theatre, and you can see more of her work next season at Strawdog. When not working in theatres around the city, Jordan works in the auditorium at Northeastern Illinois University. As always, love to the best two and four legged dudes in her life.

Christopher's recent design and composition collaborations include Life Sucks, Mr. and Mrs. Pennyworth (Lookingglass Theatre Company), and Roof of the World (Kansas City Repertory). Chris has collaborated on projects with many local Chicago companies such as Steppenwolf, Victory Gardens, 17 productions with Sideshow Theatre Company, Timeline, Porchlight, InFusion, Raven, University Of Illinois Chicago, Interrobang, Emerald City. Regional collaborations include Kansas City Repertory, Dallas Theatre Center, The Old Globe (San Diego), Center Stage (Baltimore), Arena Stage (Washington D.C.), Arsht Theatre Center (Miami), Denver Center for the Performing Arts, NY United Solo Festival.
Angela M. Campos
properties designer
Angela is elated to join the talented production team and cast for her first production with Sideshow. Since graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with bachelors in English literature and cinema studies, Angela has designed for a number of Chicago theatre companies including Eclipse (Autumn Garden) and Grippo Productions (Sex Marks the Spot). Upcoming productions include Long Day's Journey Into Night with Polarity Ensemble Theater and Lovers with City Lit. Along with working in the theatre, Angela is currently working towards a BA in interior design with a concentration in kitchen and bath design. She would like to thank her family, friends, roommate, and Filter and all coffee shops in the Chicagoland area for their support.
Katie Spelman

Katie Spelman is a choreographer and performer in Chicago, and she’s thrilled to be working with Sideshow again after collaborating with them on Theories of the Sun. Some favorite credits include: Fanny Brice (Asolo Repertory); Hair (Paramount Theatre); Apocalyptour, Holy Musical B@man (Starkid); CPS Romeo and Juliet (Chicago Shakespeare Theatre); 48 Hour Musicals (The Music Theatre Company); and The Who’s Tommy (Northwestern University). Upcoming projects include James Joyce’s The Dead (Court Theatre) and Down and Derby (The New Colony). Katie has also assisted and performed with Goodman Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Paramount Theatre, The Music Theatre Company, Writers’ Theatre, Drury Lane Oakbrook, Marriott Lincolnshire, The House Theatre. City Lit Theatre, Northwestern University, Stage Left Theatre, Maltz-Jupiter Theatre, Northlight Theatre, and American Theatre Company.
Gina M. Di Salvo

Gina is a proud artistic associate of Sideshow, where her credits for dramaturgy include Caught, The Burden of Not Having a Tail, The Ugly One, and Theories of the Sun. Other Chicago-area credits include Mine (The Gift), The Petrified Forest (Strawdog), and Dangerous Beauty (AMTP/Northwestern University). When not dramaturging new works in the theatre, she can be found researching in the archive. She teaches about the theatrical past and present at the University of Tennessee, where she is an assistant professor of theatre.
Navà Afshar
stage manager
Navà is Sideshow's company stage manager. Sideshow credits include production stage manager for Theories of the Sun, Heddatron in the 2011 Steppenwolf Garage Rep, and Strangerland in the 2011 Chi Fringe. Other Chicago credits include Peter and the Wolf with Lookingglass and CSO, Hunting and Gathering with Theatre 7, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with Emerald City Theatre Company. His regional credits include The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later at Actors Theatre of Louisville and Wait Until Dark at The Alley Theatre in Houston. Navà holds a BA in theatre from University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. Navà is also an alumni of the Actors Theatre of Louisville Intern Company where he produced/production managed several projects with the Apprentice/Intern Company. Upcoming Sideshow projects include assistant production manager for The Ugly One.
Emily Darlington Cooke

Emily is a senior at Columbia College Chicago studying directing (for theatre, not film) and psychology. She has worked on a number of productions at Columbia, most recently directing John Patrick Shanley’s Dirty Story and co-directing and production managing an original site-specific piece for Manifest. Outside of Columbia she has had the privilege to work with St. Sebastian Players and Polarity Ensemble Theatre. She is also the TA for the Feldenkrais class at Columbia, and in her free time she enjoys baking and reading The New Yorker. She would like to thank everyone at Sideshow for being so welcoming.
Kyle Kevin Gettelman
technical director
Kyle is a technical director, sound designer and audio engineer. He is currently technical director for North Central College in Naperville, Illinois operating four performing arts venues including thrust, black box, proscenium theatres, and a state of the art concert hall. Technical direction credits include Theories of the Sun, Everything Freezes: another winter’s tale (Sideshow Theatre Company), Sound of Music and La Boheme (Ash Lawn Opera Festival), Voysey Inheritance, The African Company Presents Richard III, and Scapin (UVa Drama) and Enchanted April (Heritage Repertory Theatre). Sound design credits include Twelfth Night, Songs for a New World (UVa Drama), The Diary of Anne Frank, and Dixie Swim Club (North Central College). Kyle holds an MFA in technical direction from the University of Virginia.
